FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - It was deja vu for Ed Carpenter. He picked up the second IndyCar victory of his career, and again had to beat Dario Franchitti to the checkered flag.

Carpenter's first win came a year ago in a dramatic wheel-to-wheel battle to the finish line with the four-time champion. The second victory was Saturday night at Auto Club Speedway, where Carpenter slipped past Franchitti in the second turn of the last lap, right before a caution froze the field.

The win was the first for Ed Carpenter Racing, the team the driver formed this season.

It also put an American driver in Victory Lane on the same night Ryan Hunter-Reay became the first American to win the IndyCar title since 2006.
