CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a three-year contract with forward Nick Schmaltz on Sunday.

The Blackhawks selected Schmaltz in the first round of the 2014 draft. The deal helps ease the sting from the loss of Teuvo Teravainen, who was traded to Carolina on Wednesday so the Hurricanes would take Bryan Bickell's contract off Chicago's hands.

The 20-year-old Schmaltz helped North Dakota win the NCAA title last season. He had 11 goals and 35 assists in 37 games.
