He is known for being one of the 50 Greatest Minnesota Vikings and all-time leader in scoring. Fred Cox died Thursday, November 21 at the age of 80.

I think I watched all 15 seasons that he played with the Vikings. To see a kicker out on the field at the old Met Stadium that was rock hard in December was a site to see when he split the uprights.

Cox played in all 210 regular season games scoring 1,365 points.

In 1969 Cox made a first-team all-pro selection and a Pro Bowl nod the following season. Plus, was one of the few Vikings players on the roster for four Super Bowls.

It was Cox and teammate John Mattox who gave us the NERF football in 1972. Moms and dads were now letting their kids play football inside the house.
