Now that another New Year has arrived, we have officially entered into the stretch that includes the snowiest and coldest months each year. That's why it's very important to make sure your home is winter weather ready.

Here are a few very good winter weather maintenance tips for your home to help you survive another South Dakota winter weather season.

Brian Shabino, the owner of National Property Inspections told Dakota News Now, it's always a good idea to remove snow in a timely manner. Snow removal goes beyond shoveling your driveway, sidewalks, patio, deck, and around the fire hydrants near your home.

It's also important to make sure the gutters on your home are free of leaves and other debris. Especially before we begin to receive significant amounts of snowfall.

Having your gutters free of obstructions will allow water to flow freely off your roof through your downspouts and away from your foundation and siding on your house.

Remember, moisture can quickly deteriorate wood around gutters, as well as the siding on your house. That's why it's crucial to keep the gutters on your home clean.

According to Dakota News, it's vital to make sure the interior of your home is winter weather ready as well. This includes having your furnace inspected on a regular basis and making sure your furnace filter is changed when necessary.

Finally, don't forget about the importance of keeping the venting on your gas fireplaces clear of obstructions, cleaning out your dryer vent, and taking the hoses off the spouts before winter begins.

Here's to hoping we have a relatively mild winter and that spring arrives sooner than expected.
