PIERRE - Hughes County state's attorney Max Gors has resigned citing health reasons after three months in the position.

KCCR radio reports that Gors' resignation was accepted by the county commission Monday night. It's effective immediately.

Gors was sworn in as state's attorney three months ago after facing no opposition in the November election. He had won a Republican primary in June.

Deputy State's Attorney Wendy Kloeppner will lead the office but for now will not be appointed as interim state's attorney. The commission's chairman says the designation is not needed because Kloeppner already has the authority to make decisions in the state's attorney's absence.

Commissioners have not yet decided how they will proceed in selecting a new state's attorney.
