The 49ers agreed to terms with quarterback Colin Kaepernick through the 2020 season, thus making him the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future.

The contract will reportedly pay Kaepernick upwards of $110 million dollars, with an NFL record $61 million guaranteed, courtesy of ESPN's Adam Schefter.

To put that number into context, elite quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees have $54 and $55 million guaranteed to them.

The reactions across the Twitter sphere have been mixed. The critics question Kaepernick's passing, who averages under 200 yards a game (173 the last 2 seasons to be exact).

There's also the off the field incident in Miami this offseason, which is currently still an on going investigation. Criticism aside, Kaepernick's ability in the run option has proven deadly, with 13 rushing touchdowns the last 2 seasons (4 of them postseason). Kaep also poses a threat in the deep game with huge arm and great accuracy.

This extension will also play a huge role in up coming contract negotiations for quarterbacks Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Alex Smith this season. The year after that Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Russell Wilson.

Where Colin ranks amongst those quarterbacks is up for debate, but a Super Bowl Champion (Wilson) and argueable Top 5 quarterback (Luck) are sure to command bigger contracts.

The future of the 49ers is now officially in Kaepernick's hands. With only a 2 season sample size, a Super Bowl appearance, and all the intangibles a coach could dream of, the best is probably yet come from Colin Kaepernick.
