SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says the suspension of starting quarterback Everett Golson for the fall semester means a three-man competition heading into practices in August.

Kelly says Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix both have experience and freshman Malik Zaire has a good understanding of the offense. He says all three will be given a chance to win the job.

Kelly says he's disappointed in Golson but proud of the way he handled himself in being suspended. He says he expects the suspension to be a defining moment for Golson and for him to grow and learn from it.

Golson disclosed in a letter released Sunday by the university that he was suspended for the fall semester for what he called poor academic judgment.

Notre Dame opens the season Aug. 31 against Temple.
