Don Meyer, the legendary head basketball coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, has died. He was 69.

Meyer retired in 2010 after battling cancer for two years. He continued his fight until shortly before 7am Sunday.

Meyer retired as the winningest coach in basketball history with 923 wins, only to be passed the following year by Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.

Meyer's cancer was discovered following a rollover car accident in 2008. His lower leg also had to be amputated due to injuries from the crash. Yet he coached on.

In 2009, he received the ESPN Jimmy V Espy Award for perseverance. In 2012, Meyer was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Meyer's funeral will be held in Aberdeen. Details will be announced soon.
