MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says captain Vincent Kompany could miss the rest of the season because of a groin injury, dealing another blow to the English champions' troubled season.

The Belgium defender was substituted at halftime in City's 4-2 loss to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Asked about Kompany's fitness ahead of Sunday's match against West Ham, Pellegrini said Friday "we don't know if he will be fit before the end of the season."

City has six games left in its disappointing defense of the title. The champions have dropped to fourth place in the standings, 12 points behind leader Chelsea, and the gap to fifth-place Liverpool has been reduced to four points.
