Marvelous Mitchell Effort Helps Skyforce Beat Grand Rapids
Fourth quarter heroics for the Sioux Falls Skyforce was the difference in a five-point win on Friday night. The 121-116 decision over Grand Rapids also snapped a losing streak.
After being turned back in their last three outings, Sioux Falls (4-4) rode the hot hand of Tony Mitchell in the final 12 minutes. By himself the former G League Rookie of the Year outscored the Drive (4-6) 23-20 in the fourth.
Mitchell's attacks from inside and outside was a sight to behold as he score the first 17 Skyforce points of the stanza. What began as a deficit of eight evolved into a lead of two with five minutes left.
Not to be left out of the mix, the most crucial bucket of the night came with the shot clock winding down and less than a minute left while nursing a two-point lead. Mitchell didn't take it, but he fed Ike Nwamu for a floater in the lane that pushed the Drive to the point where good options were extremely limited. Enough Skyforce conversions at the charity stripe sealed the Sioux Falls win and the Drive suffered their sixth straight loss.
For the Skyforce, Mitchell finished with 33 points and Derrick Walton, Jr. supplied 23 points and 10 assists. Meanwhile Grand Rapids got 21 points from Jamel Morris and 19 points with 10 rebounds by Landry Nnoko.
Grand Rapids takes to the road for a Sunday date north of the border with Raptors 905. Sioux Falls returns home to face Erie on Monday.
