Minnesota Twins GM Terry Ryan has been diagnosed with cancer and will not attend at least the start of Spring Training in Florida in order to address the illness.

The Twins released a statement from Ryan on Monday, describing the recent discovery of a lump in his neck by the team physician during a routine annual physical. The subsequent biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma.

According to Ryan himself, the cancer has not spread and he remains optimistic about his return to be sooner than later.

"We are grateful for the many friends and colleagues who have sent their well wishes and support throughout this challenging time," Ryan said in the statement. "It's my intention to see you back at the ballpark as soon as possible."

Terry Ryan will be receiving treatment from the Mayo Clinic as well as Minnesota Oncology.
