MLS Season Restart to Begin this Week in Home Markets

The MLS is Back Tournament was a huge success for Major League Soccer and with the Championship game pegged for Tuesday night, a decision was expected on the season restart.

That decision came on Saturday as Major League Soccer announced their season restart will begin on Wednesday, August 12 in home markets.

We all know the landscape all over the United States is currently different due to the Coronavirus and hurdles will be different for each team.

In addition to the plans on the restart, the MLS also unveiled their playoff plans which will feature 18 teams and conclude with the MLS Cup on December 12.

Fans will be allowed in some markets where health officials and local rules allow, with FC Dallas looking to be the first this week, by capping attendance at 5,100 against Nashville.

Having limited fans in the MLS could be a blueprint for other leagues who are trying to navigate a COVID-19 world while still competing at the highest level.

Locally, many eyes will be on the Minnesota United who are fresh off a semi-final appearance in the MLS is Back Tournament and will look to parlay that success into a good run during the season restart.

The MLS is a Back Championship game that will feature Portland and Orlando on Tuesday on ESPN.
