The trial for the man accused of murdering Minnesota Vikings Running Back Adrian Peterson's biological son began Tuesday (September 15) in a Lincoln County courtroom.

Joseph Patterson is charged with 2nd degree murder, manslaughter, and aggravated assault in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Robert Ruffin in October of 2013.

For the next two, even three weeks, a group of 12 women and 4 men will be listening to testimony and will ultimately decide whether Joseph Patterson is guilty.

The prosecution, led by Lincoln County State's Attorney Tom Wollman, claimed that Tyrese or 'Ty', received injuries consistent with abusive head trauma on October 9 while in Patterson's care. They argued the abuse caused his lungs to shut down and his heart to stop. The infant died two days later at a hospital after being taken off life support.

Attorney Tim Rensch with the defense argued that the evidence will show that the boy choked on fruit snacks. He claims the choking, along with the CPR performed on Ty, caused the bleeding in the boy's brain.

There was a request that the victim's mother Ashley Doohen’s car be moved away from the courthouse because of her vanity license plate read 'MY LOVE FOR TY.' Judge Brad Zell rejected the motion.

Doohen testified Tuesday that she lost her "entire world" when her child died.

Wollman says Patterson texted Doohen the day Ty that he felt he was becoming "bitter at the world."

KDLT news reports that both sides indicated that we will be hearing from medical experts throughout the trial, as well as, the recording of Patterson on the phone with 911 and his interview with police.
