CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Cam Newton says he's down, not out.

Some of the swagger has been knocked out of Newton, whose behavior is being questioned by teammates and pundits. He needs to rebound from one of his worst professional performances. Newton's individual numbers are disappointing after a sensational rookie campaign and the Panthers are just 1-4.

Still, Newton says "our goals are still attainable."

The quarterback is using the bye week to "get back to the basics" and focus on protecting the football, working on his mechanics and better understanding his reads.

He says one thing he won't change is his approach to the game.

His father Cecil Newton says one thing does need to change - his son needs to do a better job of handling the media after losses.
