SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Thursday for Sioux Falls' newest sports facility

The Ice Sports Association broke ground on the new SCHEELS IcePlex at the Sanford Sports Complex.  The $8 million facility will include three NHL regulation size rinks, bleacher seating, locker rooms, concessions and a community room.

A community fundraising effort is helping pay for the facility.  Along with private donations, the city is contributing $1.5 million to the project.

The IcePlex will help meet the increasing demand for ice time in Sioux Falls.  In addition to the Sioux Falls Youth Hockey Association and Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club, the facility will be used for recreational programs such as adult hockey, curling, broomball and open skating.

The IcePlex is scheduled to open in September 2014.
