An elderly Sioux Falls woman is out thousands of dollars in an all-too-familiar scam.

Officer Sam Clemens says the 82-year-old woman got a phone call last Tuesday from someone claiming to be her grandson, telling her he was in jail in New York.

The caller said he needed $7,500, and the woman complied, but he called again the next day to say he hadn't received the money.

This time she sent $8,000, but later she learned her grandson was not in jail and that she had been victimized.

Clemens says the woman reported her loss to police, but he says there is no way to get her money back.
