The NBA Development League Showcase has not been very kind to the Sioux Falls Skyforce in recent years.  2013 was a continuation of that trend with the second of two Showcase losses 101-73 to the Springfield Armor on Wednesday.

The Skyforce (10-8) started off the game reasonably with a 25-21 advantage after the first quarter.  In the second quarter, a 19-4 run propelled the Armor to a lead they would not relinquish.  Allowing second chances has been a recent struggle for the Skyforce as Springfield (5-11) rang up 19 offensive rebounds.  The more constant battle with turnovers numbering 27 was another major contributor in the loss.  On this day, it was the touch from outside by Carleton Scott and the inside presence of Willie Reed both with 23 points leading the Armor attack.  Sioux Falls had four players crack double digits with NBA assignee Dexter Pittman making the most of his playing time with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Both teams had made some moves prior to the Showcase to bolster their respective rosters, but the Skyforce trade for Donald Sloan may turn out to be a case of a short-term gain that may end up being a long-term loss.  Sloan was called up after two games to New Orleans which leaves a gaping hole at guard.  The Armor picked up former NBA prospect Dennis Horner who has been battling injuries, but can still play in spurts.

It was also a day that Sioux Falls got their third GATORADE Call-up as Jarvis Varnado went back to the NBA with the team that drafted him, the Miami Heat.  Varnado cleared waivers and signed on Wednesday after spending less than two weeks with Boston.  That good news is tempered by a slump at the Showcase and room on the roster.  Plus there is no time for head-hanging as Sioux Falls hosts the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday and Saturday.  Springfield will in turn return to the East coast for a home and home with the Maine Red Claws over the weekend.
