LINCOLN, NE -- The Sioux Falls Stampede scored the first goal of the season, but the Lincoln Stars scored the next five and topped the Herd 5-1 Friday night in Lincoln. Kyle Schempp scored the only goal for the Herd while Charlie Lindgren played in goal. It was the first game of the season for both clubs.

The Stampede grabbed the first goal of the season 7:03 in when Schempp tallied his first career USHL goal. #1 draft pick Tony Calderone brought the puck into the Stars zone down the right wing boards and fed Schempp in the slot who tipped the puck through the pads of Lincoln goaltender Jackson Teichroeb to give the Stampede a 1-0.  Lindgren then put on a goaltending clinic with several big saves which included a poke check and save off his left shoulder. With 9:03, the Stars were awarded a rare penalty shot, but Will Suter was denied on a pad save by Lindgren.

The Stars would eventually find a way to beat Lindgren, shorthanded, and get on the board when Dominik Shine blasted a shot from the top of the right circle into the right hand corner of the net to make it a 1-1 game. That’s the way it would stay heading into the second period with both teams registering 10 shots a piece.

The Stars wasted little time getting things rolling in the second, scoring just 52 seconds in when Shine tallied his second of the night. Justin Woods slipped the puck into the left circle to Shine who blasted a shot past the pads of Lindgren to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. The Stars would add to their lead midway through the period when Jake Wood blasted a shot past the glove side of Lindgren and Lincoln took a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

The Stars pulled away from the Stampede in the third, scoring twice, once on an empty net and rolled past the Herd by a final of 5-1. The Herd finished 1 for 4 on the powerplay while Lincoln was 0 for 4.

Sioux Falls will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Waterloo to face the Black Hawks at 7:05 PM.
