Each year in this country, over one billion dollars in personal items and accessories are stolen from vehicles.

Sioux Falls Police Captain Loren McManus says a number of the break ins could have been prevented simply by locking the car doors.

"Always a good idea to lock up your cars. Even more important don't leave valuables in your car. If you have to for some reason just make sure the vehicle is locked. We had a few larcenies over the weekend. A large percentage of those crimes were from unlocked vehicles."

McManus says a number of items were ripped off from the unlocked cars in Sioux Falls.

"We had a mixture of coins, a wallet, and electronic items that were taken. Please make sure if you do have valuables in the vehicle make sure it is locked."

According to some law enforcement agencies up to a quarter of vehicle thefts are from unlocked cars.
