The Washington Nationals' season took yet another dismal turn Sunday, when recently acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon and MVP-candidate Bryce Harper tussled in the dugout during the eighth inning. On Monday the Nats announced they had suspended Papelbon for the rest of the season.
The Minnesota Twins will send outfielder Chris Colabello back to Triple-A Rochester after adding him to the major league roster for a doubleheader against the Washington Nationals.
Ian Desmond doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and the Washington Nationals made manager Davey Johnson’s “fun day” even better Sunday with a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins to complete a sweep of a day-night doubleheader. The Nationals shut out the Twins 7-0 in the first game.
On a day that had already featured a pair of marathon games elsewhere in baseball and a doubleheader the next day, the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals needed to end extra innings in a hurry. Ryan Doumit made sure they did.
