Police say they were called around 5:46 p.m. on Wednesday to an apartment in the 6200 block of South Connie Avenue, where they found the unresponsive child.
Investigators say the child had been under the care of a man they identify as the boyfriend of the child's mother.

The two-year-old was rushed to a hospital, where it was learned he had sustained bodily injuries that police say were not accidental and were consistent with abuse.

He later died from his injuries.

Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens would not talk about the child's father:

However, Peterson's father, Nelson Peterson confirmed that it was the running back's son.

Nelson Peterson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press "We are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation."

Adrian Peterson was in Sioux Falls on Thursday, but returned to practice on Friday.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier told local media that Peterson "had a difficult day. We expect him to play, but we’ll talk more over the next 24 hours.”

However, Peterson said that he would play. "I will be playing Sunday, without a doubt."

“I really appreciate all the support from fans and the Vikings,” he said. “I ask y’all to please respect my privacy, and not ask at all about the situation.”

The boyfriend, 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault.

Patterson has a history of violence. According to the Argus Leader, he was charged with beating a 3-year-old boy in 2012.

In court on Friday, Lincoln County State’s Attorney Tom Wollman asked a judge to revoke the terms of Patterson’s suspended sentence on two domestic abuse cases. The first involved an assault on the mother of his own child and another of her children, the other arose from his refusal to abide by a judge’s order that he have no contact with them. Patterson was indicted on several counts of simple assault involving the woman and her 3-year-old son in June of 2012.

Patterson is currently being held on $750,000 bond.

Adrian Peterson took to Twitter to thank fans for their support:

TMZ is reporting that Peterson only recently learned he was the boy's father after being notified by the mother following a blood test she had done in an attempt to collect child support from the man she thought was the father. When the test came up negative, she knew is was Peterson, who she had an encounter with several years ago. Peterson had planned to fly to Sioux Falls in a few weeks to meet the son he never knew about. When he was notified Thursday of what had happened, he dropped everything to be here. The first time he met his son was in the hospital Thursday as the boy was on life support.
