The video above was taken on Dec. 10th, 2012 when South Dakota Highway Patroll Trooper Andrew Steen was released from the hospital following an incident last October in which he tried to stop a suspected drunk driver. In the process of pursuing the suspect Steen discharged his weapon as the female driver then hit him with her car, leaving him critically injured.

Now, the 34-year-old Sioux Falls native has now been recognized for his bravery. According to KSFY TV, Steen was named the American Association of State Troopers "2013 Trooper of the Year."

The American Association of State Troopers 'Trooper of the Year Award' is presented to a state trooper who exemplified traits of an outstanding law enforcement officer the previous year. Steen will receive the award during a ceremony Thursday.
