SIOUX FALLS - With South Dakota experiencing widespread cases of flu and flu-related hospitalization rates climbing, the City of Sioux Falls Health Department, in partnership with local hospitals and health care systems, wants to remind people that it is not too late to be vaccinated against influenza.

Anyone older than six months of age who has not been vaccinated against the flu should be vaccinated as soon as possible. By getting your flu shot, you are protecting yourself and your loved ones by helping to prevent the spread of the flu. Flu vaccine is the most effective protection against the flu. It is especially important for those who live with or care for people who are at high risk for flu-related complications to be immunized.

People who develop influenza-like symptoms, which include high fever, cough, severe body aches, fatigue, and runny nose, are encouraged to see their doctor as soon as symptoms develop for treatment that can help lessen the severity and duration of the illness. People at high risk for complications, such as young children, woman who are pregnant, people who are morbidly obese, or people that have chronic health conditions should be seen early if they have symptoms.

For the overall safety and protection of patients and staff, the health care coalition is asking anyone with flu-like symptoms not to visit patients at our local hospitals at this time.

For more information about the flu or where you can be vaccinated, contact Avera Health's Ask-A-Nurse (1-800-658-3535), Sanford Health's My Sanford Nurse (333-4444), or your health care provider.

You can also get flu shots at your local pharmacy. However, due to higher than expected demand, we recommend that you contact your closest pharmacy to check availability and/or to schedule an appointment if necessary.
